EXPLORE

The Cradle of Acadie

The Port-Royal / Annapolis Royal area is the "Cradle of Acadie" and a convenient home base to use to explore the former Acadian regions of Grand-Pre / Piziquid (Windsor) and present-day Clare / Argyle areas.

This website and the new ACADIAN section of the Explorer Visitors Guide will continue to grow with many more Acadian resources between now and CMA 2024. Be sure to check back often!

Click on the Explorer Visitors Guide photo for our preliminary Acadian edition. See pages 26-34. Expanded Acadian Guide will be available later this summer.

Annapolis Royal Deportation

The deportation from Annapolis Royal was the second largest in 1755 after Grand-Pre. A total of 1,664 people were deported on 7 boats. Tenth-generation Acadian ambassador, Alan Melanson, tells the story of this lesser known deportation and The Historical Association of Annapolis Royal's plans to commemorate it.

WORLD CONGRESS OF ACADIANS

The World Congress of Acadians returns to Southwest Nova Scotia in 2024 for the first time in 20 years. The Clare and Argyle regions will host CMA2024 August 10-18. The Port-Royal / Annapolis Royal area, "The Cradle of Acadie", is also planning special events. Watch this website for event dates and details. To stay up-to-date with the activities planned in the Clare and Argyle areas, visit the CMA 2024 website at www.cma2024.ca

SUGGESTED ACADIAN TOUR ITINERARIES

The Port-Royal / Annapolis Royal Area, "The Cradle of Acadie", is centrally-located and a perfect home base to Explore Acadie. Travelling towards Halifax, you can visit the former Acadian regions of Grand-Pré and Piziquid to learn about the Expansion of Acadie before the deportation. Head in the opposite direction from Annapolis Royal towards Yarmouth for a visit to the Clare and Argyle regions and discover the story of the Return to Acadie and see where the Acadians resettled after the deportation. Here are the first Itineraries for these three Explorer Guide tours.
